The Dream Team:Barack Nominates Hillary Clinton

Author: The One // Category:

President-elect Barack Obama has named his one-time political rival, New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, as his secretary of state. Clinton is expected to resign her Senate seat to prepare to lead U.S. foreign policy in the latest chapter in her long career.

"She is an American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence, who knows many of the world's leaders, who will command respect in every capitol, and who will clearly have the ability to advance our interests around the world," Obama said, adding that her appointment was "a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances."

Obama also announced his intention to keep current Defense Secretary Robert Gates in his post. The president-elect also said he would nominate Susan Rice as ambassador to the United Nations, retired Marine Gen. James Jones as his national security adviser, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as homeland security director and Eric Holder as attorney general.

For many democrats, todays selections are seen as The Political Dream Team.

Plaxico Burress Shoots Himself

Author: The One // Category:

New York Giants wide reciever, Plaxico Burres, accidently shot himself in the leg at a New York night club Friday night.

Burress was treated and released from New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He was there overnight and was released at 2 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, Burress could face criminal charges if he is not licensed to carry a concealed weapon in New York.

ESPN medical analyst Dr. Michael Kaplan said the gunshot wound inflicted by Burress, at short range with soft tissue damage, can cause bleeding and swelling. But because there was no artery, nerve or bone involvement, and assuming there is no tissue death or infection, Burress probably can return to the Giants' lineup in two to four weeks.

Plaxico surrendered himself to authorities Monday morning and is expected to face charges of illegal gun possession.

Since it's Monday, I'll behave....No Comment->SMH

World AIDS Day

Author: The One // Category:

Today is the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. And anyone who knows me, knows AIDS prevention is one of my causes. Thanks to modern medication, I have yet to lose anyone to AIDS. However it has gone from being a text book subject, to reality with in the past year because I do know people living with the virus.

December 1 each year is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007,[1] and an estimated 33 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 2 million lives in 2007, of which about 270,000 were children. The concept of a World AIDS Day originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. Since then, it has been taken up by governments, international organizations and charities around the world. Source

Now to bring it home for my DMV readers: One in 20 Adults in DC Has HIV. The nation's capital is in the midst of a modern-day HIV-AIDS epidemic. In a city of 600,000 people, the District of Columbia has more than 12,000 cases, and 81 percent of them are African-Americans.
